Upgrading Highway CCTV: IP/PoE Cameras Over Coaxial Cables

Upgrading Highway CCTV: IP/PoE Cameras Over Coaxial Cables

CCTV Camera Renewal Might Not Be as Simple as We Thought

Switching CCTV cameras from analog to IP/PoE usually involves replacing DVRs with NVRs and swapping out existing coaxial cables for Ethernet cables. However, this part of the project is often the most challenging for workers, especially in harsh environments.

Requirement for CCTV Camera Upgrade

A system integrator aimed to upgrade all analog CCTV cameras to PoE ones in a highway tunnel. The cables were installed beneath the tunnel ceiling, making them difficult to replace and complicating the task of finding power sources for CCTV cameras without nearby power sockets.

After reevaluating the situation, the engineers sought a solution that could send the PoE signal over existing coaxial cables and meet the following requirements:

  • Over 300 meters PoE transmission distance, from engine room to camera end.

  • High network bandwidth to ensure steady 4K video transmission for monitoring.

  • Easy installation to minimize working time and prevent construction accidents on the highway.

  • Good thermal dissipation to ensure reliable operation even when the device is covered with dust.

SC&T’s 90W High Power PoE over Coaxial Extender

The IP09CP can extend the PoE signal over coaxial cable, saving the time needed to replace existing cables. Additionally, the extender can provide up to 90 watts of power to support various PoE cameras and offers up to 100Mbps network bandwidth for 4K video transfer (approximately 15-32Mbps).

Long Reach PoE Extender over Coax Kit - IP09CPK

  • Extends PoE signal over a coaxial cable.
  • Signal extension up to 800m over RG59/6U coaxial cable.
  • Up to 90W power for remote PoE devices.
  • Power source from either a PoE switch or an external power adapter.
  • Bandwidth up to 100Mbps.

We also offer a PoE Extender over Cat5e (IP09PK) model , with the same features as the IP09CP.

Why Choosing SC&T IP/PoE over Coaxial Solution

  • No cable reinstallation, time saving.

  • Advanced heat dissipation ability, low chance of malfunctioning.

  • Easy maintenance, only need to maintain the devices at two end-points and identify problems via LED indication.

  • Steady signal transmission, more precisely identifying incidents without signal interruptions.

  • SC&T PoE over coaxial solution helps the system integrator to solve the PoE transmission issue for CCTV upgrade project and finish the work 6 days before the expected date.

While daisy chaining PoE repeaters and PoE switches can be one of the options, it may have shortcomings such as:

  • High cost for multiple PoE repeaters

  • Require multiple power supplies

  • Require multiple storage spaces for devices

  • Short transmission distance

  • Insufficient power in a long distance

  • Time-consuming installation

SC&T's PoE over coaxial solution helped the system integrator solve the PoE transmission issue for the CCTV upgrade project and finish the work 6 days ahead of schedule.
